Programs for High School Learners Return for Summer 2023

minerva - shipt 2022

Summer programs for high school students have become increasingly popular on leading college campuses across the United States, and for good reason. Summer programs present prospective students with the opportunity to experience campus life and build social and professional networks with other students, faculty, staff, and industry professionals.

The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business has prospective students covered through programs to engage high school learners and prepare them for possible college careers. These programs include the Minerva Young Women’s Business Summer Program, the Diversity in Business Bridge Program, and the Marillyn A. Hewson Cybersecurity Summer Camp.

Minerva Young Women’s Business Summer Program

The Minerva Young Women’s Business Summer Program, which will take place July 9-14, 2023, is a week-long camp on The University of Alabama campus that introduces women to the college experience and allows them to connect with like-minded women interested in business. The Minerva program exposes rising female high school seniors to business as a major and career path and promotes the development of leadership skills in these students.

Additionally, the program emphasizes areas in business in which women are commonly underrepresented, including leadership roles. Throughout the week, students will participate in sessions led by Culverhouse College of Business faculty and staff, where they will learn about career opportunities in business, build leadership and communication skills, complete a service project, go on field trips, and experience campus life.

Check out a recap of the 2022 session for more info.

Full and partial scholarships are available to applicants.

Culverhouse Diversity in Business Bridge Program

The Diversity in Business Bridge Program is a college preparation program that focuses particularly on promoting postsecondary success for underrepresented minority students, helping them make a smoother transition to college. The Bridge Program gives rising Alabama high school seniors from historically marginalized groups who are interested in business fields the opportunity to gain professional development, attain skills needed for success in college, and enhance their critical thinking skills. Participants will also learn how to set goals and understand financial literacy to become more personally, fiscally, and socially responsible, both personally and professionally.

Students will learn from the renowned Culverhouse College of Business faculty, who will lead engaging sessions about functional areas of business (including marketing, accounting, and entrepreneurship), as well as various experiential activities.

Bridge Program graduates who are later admitted to The University of Alabama and pursue a degree in business will be eligible for financial support from Culverhouse. The program will take place on UA’s campus on June 19-25, 2023, and the program is free of charge to all participants, thanks to the partnership between Culverhouse and Protective Life Corporation.

The Marillyn A. Hewson Cybersecurity Summer Camp

Cybersecurity has become an increasingly attractive area of study for college students, as it equips them with the necessary technical knowledge to defend computer and network systems, as well as essential data, from cyber-attacks. The Marillyn A. Hewson Cybersecurity Summer Camp at Culverhouse introduces high school students to this high-demand field early on, providing them with computer science and coding basics.

The camp, which features two sessions from June 5-9 and June 12-16, encourages self-exploration through multiple cyber security projects. The 2022 iteration brought together teens from across the state to learn more about digital security and resiliency.

The program is supported in part through a gift from Culverhouse alumna Marillyn A. Hewson, formerly the chairman, president, and CEO of aerospace firm Lockheed Martin Corporation.
