Culverhouse LIFT Program Strives to Teach Key Business Skills to Public

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Registration is open for the fall session of Culverhouse LIFT, or Learning Initiative and Financial Training.

A service sponsored by The Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama, Culverhouse LIFT provides one-on-one job skills and financial literacy training for Tuscaloosa-area adults and teens at no cost.

Program participants come from different backgrounds and include urban and rural residents, veterans and high school students. Student volunteers from the College and other programs at UA serve as educators.

Now in its fourth year, Culverhouse LIFT uses student volunteers in the College’s academic programs as well as community experts to lead a series of classes that include computer literacy and training, financial fitness, professional development, business communication and math skills for the workplace.

The sessions take place at the McDonald Hughes Community Center in the southwest part of the city; the downtown EDGE Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and the Tuscaloosa Gateway Innovation and Discovery Center in Alberta.

Lisa McKinney, Culverhouse accounting lecturer, leads the program and coordinates the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers who teach the class.

“Year after year, we’ve been able to grow LIFT into a critical resource for area residents to gain valuable job and personal finance skills,” she said. “Through the experiential learning component of LIFT, our student volunteers learn how to become compassionate and effective business leaders, a capability that will serve them well once they graduate and start their careers.”

LIFT accepts monetary and in-kind donations, which are used to  benefit community participants through student support and new laptop computers. The program is also seeking speakers who can share business insights. For more information about LIFT, phone 205-928-8258, email lift@cba.ua.edu or visit https://culverhouse.ua.edu/lift
