Robert James “Jim” Kelly’s legacy reaches far beyond his remarkable achievements in retail and finance. As vice chairman, President and CAO of Family Dollar Stores, Inc., Jim’s vision and steady leadership helped grow the company from 2,700 to over 7,000 stores and secured its place among the Fortune 300. Yet, those who worked alongside him remember Jim most for his genuine investment in people. He had a gift for mentoring employees—guiding new team members and seasoned professionals alike with patience, wisdom, and encouragement.
After earning his degree at the University of Alabama in 1969 and serving with honor in the Army, Jim pursued a master’s in accounting. His 24-year career at Price Waterhouse was marked not only by professional accomplishments but also by his reputation as an inspiring coach and thoughtful leader. He brought these same qualities to Family Dollar, where his guidance extended beyond the boardroom, helping countless colleagues reach their full potential.
Jim’s approach was simple but profound: he believed the company’s success rested on the growth and well-being of its people. Whether overseeing store operations or tackling big-picture strategy, he was always ready to listen, offer advice, and champion others’ ambitions. His dedication to mentoring continued in his charitable work, where he uplifted those around him as a board leader for nonprofits in Tampa and Charlotte.
Jim Kelly passed away on April 4, 2021, leaving behind a legacy defined not just by business milestones, but by the many lives he enriched with his generous spirit and unwavering support for those who followed in his path.
On Nov. 7, 2025, he became the namesake of the program. Through his family’s generosity, his name remains closely tied to professional development, helping accelerate the career readiness of Culverhouse undergraduates.
