WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Scholarship Qualifications

Our scholarship committee meets shortly after the March 1st deadline to evaluate all of the undergraduate and graduate applications. Scholarships are then assigned based on a variety of factors.

Qualifications to be considered for a scholarship include, but are not limited to:

  • Full-time student (12 hours or more per term)
  • Junior or Senior in the Culverhouse College of Business*
  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Pursue or agree to pursue an RMI/AS specialization**
  • Join and remain active in Gamma Iota Sigma
  • Participate in events sponsored by the RMI/AS program

Other factors affecting your application include:

  • Location of Permanent Residence
  • Leadership Experience/Extracurricular Involvement
  • First-Generation College Student status
  • Financial Need

Note that you have the opportunity to provide additional details about financial need or other special circumstances on the application.

*Students with exceptional potential may receive a scholarship as early as the first semester of their sophomore year. **Actuarial Science students must establish a plan with their advisor for completing an actuarial exam.

Awarding

After the department has received the signed acceptance letter, funds will be allocated to the student’s account. This typically occurs in mid-July for the upcoming Fall semester and late December for the upcoming Spring semester.

Criteria for maintaining a scholarship

Recipients Must:

  • Be a Culverhouse College of Business student
  • Be pursuing a minor in Risk Management & Insurance or Actuarial Science.
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0
  • Meet with the scholarship advisor within the first three weeks of each semester
  • Notify the scholarship advisor if the student’s curriculum plan changes
  • Join Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS)
  • Attend GIS meetings (at least once a month)
  • Send a Thank You Letter to the sponsor of the scholarship
  • Pass an actuarial examination within the following two semesters (counting summer as a semester) upon completion of the first Actuarial Science-related course (either FI 427 Probability for Actuaries or FI 428 Financial Mathematics for Actuaries). Failure to do so, will result in the revocation of my scholarship.**

When will recipients be notified?

No later than May 15th. 

I don’t have the best grades, should I still apply?

Yes! Everyone should apply, as scholarships are awarded based on many factors.

What is the typical amount of an award?

Award amounts vary based on the scholarship in question. However, typical awards range from $1,000 to $2,500 per semester.

What should I include on my application?

Please be thorough when filling out your application. Set aside at least 30 minutes to complete it. List any achievements or interests that you believe help set you apart from the other applications. When in doubt, add more information, not less.

What constitutes as an extenuating circumstance?

These are personal circumstances that are outside of your control and have, or likely have had, a significant impact on your academic performance. These challenges could be physical, emotional, or financial. Whether you have overcome these situations or are still currently dealing with them, they are still noteworthy to your personal growth while in school.
