In today’s interconnected world, where data breaches and cyber threats have become increasingly prevalent and costly for those affected, experts who can proactively develop resilience programs — and assemble a measured and appropriate responses — are in high demand.
The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business proudly announces a new undergraduate degree offering in business cybersecurity, offered through its Department of Information Systems, Statistics, and Management Science.
Business cybersecurity differs from traditional cybersecurity in that it adds business management atop a technical foundation.
Graduates not only understand the technical aspects of cybersecurity, but they also possess a solid understanding of business operations, risk management, and compliance. This combination allows them to effectively bridge the gap between IT departments and top-level management, enabling them to make strategic decisions that align with organizational goals.
Dr. Allen Johnston, professor of management information systems and the Hewson Professor of Cybersecurity, said, “Our bachelor’s in business cybersecurity promises to help students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to identify vulnerabilities, implement robust security measures, and develop incident response plans, thereby reducing the overall risk for organizations.”
“Graduates can expect to start their careers as cybersecurity analysts, information security analyst, technology auditors, or data management specialist, moving upward through the ranks of their respective organizations as they gain experience.”
The business cybersecurity major is just one aspect of Culverhouse’s expertise in cybersecurity and other business-focused technical areas. The College offers an MBA with focused area of study in cybersecurity and is home to the Marillyn A. Hewson Data Analytics Lab as well as the Institute of Data and Analytics, which works on proprietary cybersecurity projects for governmental and commercial clients.
