Dr. Shawn Mobbs Named Associate Dean for Faculty and Research

The Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shawn Mobbs as Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, starting August 16. Dr. Jim Cochran, who has served in the role since 2017, will return to the College’s Department of Information Systems, Statistics, and Management Science and resume teaching duties.

Dr. Shawn Mobbs is the Thomas D. Russell Professor of Business Administration. He joined the Culverhouse College of Business in 2008 as a finance professor in the Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies department. Dr. Mobbs earned his PhD from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from the University of Georgia. From 2016 to 2023, Dr. Mobbs served as the Finance Area Coordinator.

His research covers topics related to corporate governance including executive compensation, director and executive labor markets, and director incentives. He has published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Management, and Financial Review. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Mobbs was an officer in the United States Air Force serving as a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite analyst. He also held positions with the Procter & Gamble Corp., as a supply chain/control systems manager and engineer, and with the FedEx Corp. as a financial analyst in the Corporate Financial Planning group. He holds both a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

About his vision for the role, Mobbs said, “We are a very large and diverse college when it comes to research and faculty. My first priority is to keep the momentum going by providing the support our faculty need to be successful.”
