Dr. William Bill Rabel

Dr. William “Bill” Rabel, recently-retired

Dr. Rabel held the and worked closely with students in the College’s Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science program as an instructor, mentor, and friend.

He energized the Alabama Insurance Society and founded the Actuarial Science program. Recognitions he received include the Alabama Finance Association Outstanding Faculty Award, the John S. Bickley Culverhouse College of Business Creativity and Innovation Award, The University of Alabama National Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, the Culverhouse College of Business Board of Visitors Teaching Achievement Award, and the American Risk & Insurance Association Excellence in Teaching Award.

In 2021, the Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies department established a distinguished service award in his honor. Rabel provided faculty support for Alabama Insurance Day, an on-campus program designed to provide continuing education and networking with peers and students

Active in many organizations, Dr. Rabel’s service included serving as trustee of the S. S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education; director of the American Risk & Insurance Association (President’s Award laureate); president of the Asia-Pacific Risk & Insurance Association; and member of the Insurance Hall of Fame Honors Committee.

He earned a bachelor’s in business administration/insurance from Texas A&M, and a master’s and doctorate in applied economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

There will be a celebration of life for Dr. Rabel on July 30 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Tuscaloosa at 605 Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard.
