Dr. Thomas M. English is an Associate Professor of Management at The University of Alabama, where he has taught for more than a decade. A proud UA alumnus, he earned his B.A. in Communications before completing an M.S. in Management at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a Ph.D. in Health Services Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Before returning to Tuscaloosa, Dr. English built a career at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and data. He implemented and customized electronic health record systems across multiple clinical sites, directed research initiatives with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and served as Principal Investigator on projects funded by the Department of Justice, NIH, CDC, and other national organizations. His scholarship includes dozens of peer-reviewed publications on healthcare analytics, informatics, and quality improvement.
For Dr. English, the decision to return to Alabama was simple: “Mama called.” As both a former student and longtime faculty member, he believes his greatest impact is made here—serving the people of Alabama by preparing the next generation of business leaders and innovators.
At Alabama, Dr. English has been recognized with the 2025 John S. Bickley Innovation and Creativity Award for pioneering approaches to teaching, as well as the UA Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity (URCA) Top Faculty Mentor Award in both 2021 and 2022 for his dedication to mentoring students in research and applied learning. His courses span healthcare analytics, systems improvement, and data visualization, but his current focus is on reimagining management education through AI-enabled learning and technology-driven pedagogy.
His newest initiative uses fantasy football as a dynamic, real-world context for teaching data visualization and analytics. By blending popular culture with advanced tools like Tableau, Power BI, and AI-driven insights, he empowers students to build real skills while engaging with a subject they genuinely care about.
Through this work, Dr. English continues to pursue his mission of serving the state of Alabama by making complex data approachable, relevant, and engaging—while honoring the call that brought him back home.
