Learning What’s Possible: Manderson Master’s in Business Analytics Graduate Benjamin Ajibade

Benjamin Ajibade - Manderson Profiles-22

A few weeks ago, new Manderson Master’s in Business Analytics (MSBA) graduate Benjamin Ajibade discussed his experiences at Manderson and his plans for the future.

Where are you from?

I am the last from a family of six. I hail from the southwestern part of Nigeria, and grew up in a quiet environment called Ile-Ife, few kilometers from bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria. Despite coming from humble beginnings, I have always had big dreams and a burning desire to make a difference in the world.

What led you to UA?

I‘ve always have a fascination with the latest scientific innovations and advancements coming out of the United States. From cutting-edge medical breakthroughs to revolutionary new technologies, I dreamed of being part of the next big thing. And so, as I approached the end of my undergraduate studies, I began reaching out to schools in the US, hoping to find the perfect fit for my academic and professional goals.

That’s when I heard about the University of Alabama. A UA alumnus and president of the African Student Association had shared on social media about the university’s strong commitment to diversity and interculturally enhanced learning environments. Intrigued, I delved deeper into the university’s website, and was impressed by what I found.

I learned about UA’s world-class faculty, state-of-the-art research facilities, and vibrant campus community–all of which seemed like the perfect fit for my goals and aspirations. And so, I decided to apply, even though it meant leaving behind everything I had ever known in Nigeria and embarking on a new and uncertain journey. But I was determined to succeed. I worked hard, worked diligently, and made the most of every opportunity that came my way. And in the end, it all paid off.

Looking back on this journey I know that I made the right choice in coming to the University of Alabama. And I hope that my story will inspire others to take risks, follow their dreams, and never stop striving to become a Legend.

What led you to business in general, and your area specifically?

As a young data science analyst in Nigeria, I was fascinated by the world of technology and the endless possibilities it held. I had studied computer science and engineering in college, and was excited to apply these skills to real-world problems and challenges. But as I worked in the industry, I began to notice a gap in his knowledge–a gap that threatened to hold me back in my career.

The more the rapidly field of data science grew, the more I realized that I needed to broaden this skill set and deepen my understanding of statistics and computer science. I knew that I needed to find a program that would help me bridge the gap, and prepare me for the challenges of the future.

The moment I came across the UA’s Business Analytics program, with its focus on the latest technologies, tools, and techniques in data analysis and management, the program seemed like the perfect fit for my goals and aspirations. I applied eagerly, and was thrilled to be accepted.

What has been your experience with your master’s program?

I consider myself lucky to be mentored by the business college professors. Apart from the knowledge they impart, they made my transition very smooth, and they are quite open for discussion. The style of teaching is pragmatic and always about preparing the students for the challenges in the real world. I will like to quote one of my favorite professors, renowned for his hands on approach to teaching: “I want to push out your critical thinking skills and how you can apply them in real-world situations.”

Over the course of my studies, I have immersed myself in the world of business analytics, soaking up knowledge and insights from some of the brightest minds in the field. I have improved knowledge of how to analyze data, build predictive models, and make informed decisions based on the results, thanks to access to the state-of-the-art facilities in the IDA.

What’s next for you? What are your career goals?

I plan to take my skills and apply them in the real world, working with companies and organizations to help them unlock the power of data analytics. I know that there’s a huge demand for professionals with my skill set, and I am eager to make a difference wherever I can. But I’m not content to stop there. I have my sights set on the future, and know that a PhD in Artificial Intelligence is the next logical step in my career journey. I want to continue learning, growing, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of data science.
